The enclosure is the backbone of any battery energy storage system (BESS) or energy storage system (ESS). It protects cells and electronics, manages heat and, in outdoor installations, must withstand rain, dust and temperature extremes. This guide explains what to consider when designing and sourcing an energy storage cabinet enclosure.
What Is an Energy Storage Cabinet Enclosure
An energy storage cabinet enclosure is the metal housing that contains battery modules, a battery management system (BMS), power conversion equipment and thermal-management hardware. It comes in air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations, from compact wall-mounted units to large commercial-and-industrial (C&I) and utility-scale cabinets.
Key Design Considerations
Thermal management
Heat is the biggest threat to battery life and safety. Air-cooled enclosures use ventilation and fans; liquid-cooled designs integrate cooling plates and sealed circuits for higher power density. The enclosure must be engineered around the chosen thermal strategy — with proper airflow paths, mounting bosses and sealed penetrations.
Ingress protection
Outdoor cabinets typically require IP54 to IP66 ratings. That means sealed seams, gasketed doors and protected vents. The higher the IP rating, the more critical the welding and sealing quality becomes.
Structural strength & safety
Battery cabinets are heavy. The enclosure must carry significant static and dynamic loads, resist vibration during transport, and provide fire-rated separation where required. Reinforced frames, correct material thickness and validated welds are essential.
Material Selection
Most energy storage enclosures use cold-rolled steel for cost and strength, with stainless steel or aluminum for corrosion-prone or weight-sensitive applications. Surface finishing — typically electrostatic powder coating — protects against corrosion and provides a durable, aesthetic finish. Laser perforation is often added for ventilation and acoustic panels.
The Manufacturing Process
A reliable enclosure is produced through a controlled sequence: design and DFM, laser cutting, bending, forming, welding, grinding and deburring, riveting, powder coating, and final assembly with QC. In-house control of every step minimizes defects and shortens lead time. See our 9-step fabrication process for details.
Choosing a Manufacturer
Look for a partner with energy-storage experience, ISO-certified quality systems and IP protection testing capability. SanJun Hardware fabricates C&I integrated BESS cabinets, air-cooled ESS AC-DC cabinets and 241kWh liquid-cooled storage cabinets — with free CAD & DFM and delivery of 7–30 days depending on complexity.
